April has arrived and hibernation is over! Ok, I have not been hibernating. I find winter is one of the most productive seasons. I find I can dive into a series of paintings and focus on detail and develop skills.
I have been thinking about how artists decide what is valuable in their methods and artwork. Just as there is a moral compass I am beginning to think in terms of an aesthetic compass. In deciding what is valued in art, artists need to assign less value in all other forms.
Abstract artists intrinsically believe that realism is less valued and vice versa. Skill-based art or vision-based? What is your aesthetic compass?
